6 Medicare shopping tips to help you compare plans

We are one month away from the start of Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP) – the time where you can choose or update your Medicare coverage. Seeking the advice of friends or family members is great but remember to find the coverage you need for the life you lead. Find the Medicare plan that fits – there are different plans with different benefits to suit your unique needs. Here are some helpful Medicare shopping tips to keep in mind as you compare different Medicare plans.

1. Consider the total cost

Some plans may have a $0 premium, but premiums are just the beginning. You also want to check out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays and coinsurance. Remember that Original Medicare does not have an out-of-pocket maximum meaning that medical care can be expensive, especially in the case of an emergency.

2. Do they have your doctors?

Look at the plan’s provider network to make sure your doctors, hospitals and other important providers are covered.

3. Are you getting what you need?

It may sound like a no-brainer, but it’s important to make sure your plan has coverage for the specific services you need (or might need). Remember that Original Medicare doesn’t cover dental, vision or hearing. You can find Medicare Advantage plans that do… plus other extras.

4. Look closely at the extras

Extra benefits are designed to help you get more for your money and get more out of life. Take a closer look at the plan’s extra offerings. Dental is included? Great! But does it only include preventive coverage? Make sure you know what you’re getting.

5. Make a list of your prescriptions

Different Medicare plans offer different types of coverage with different copays. Avoid any surprises by looking to see if your prescription drugs are covered before you enroll.

6. Do you “feel good” about the insurer?

Your health plan should give you peace of mind. Don’t choose a plan unless you feel confident that the insurer will be there for you if you need help.
