Let us start by saying thank you for taking the time to help someone else with their Medicare needs.
I know it can look overwhelming but, once you know what you’re looking for, it’s not that complicated. Here are some tips to help you help others.
-
Learn the basics.
There are different types of Medicare plans to meet different needs. Make sure you understand how the different types of plans work.
-
Schedule a doctor visit.
Not your doctor. The primary care physician of the person you’re helping. Get information on his or her health care, screenings, prescriptions, treatment strategies. The more you know, the better job you can do finding a good Medicare plan.
-
Keep records.
Write down the names and addresses of all of the doctors seen by the person you’re helping. Do the same with their prescriptions (including dosages). This will make it easier to compare plans and coverage.
-
Put yourself in their shoes.
To know your next steps, visit our What you need to do page and enter the information of the person you’re caring for. This should help you figure out what you need to do.
-
Make it legal.
If the person you are caring for wants you to make Medicare decisions on his or her behalf, you’ll need to consult your State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get authorized.
-
Don’t go it alone.
